Do AI Systems Put the Same Software First? Four-Market Study — October 2026
A RecommendationIndex study compares the first-ranked software recommendation from four AI systems across 20 buyer questions in four markets.
The study covers 20 exact prompts, four recorded AI systems, 80 completed evaluations, 388 observations, 353 recommendations, 35 non-recommended mentions, 80 first-ranked recommendation rows, and zero attached citation records.
Supported findings
- Only 4 of 20 buyer questions (20%) produced the same first-ranked company across all four systems.
- Fourteen of 20 prompts had at least a three-system rank-one majority; six had no three-system majority, including three prompts where all four recorded company IDs differed.
- Email Marketing showed the most consistent rank-one pattern: all five prompts had at least a three-system majority, though only one was unanimous.
- Help Desk Software showed the least rank-one consensus: none of five prompts was unanimous and only two had a three-system majority.
- Company-identity fragmentation can reduce measured consensus: examples include Mailchimp versus Intuit Mailchimp, Freshdesk versus Freshworks (Freshdesk), and two Microsoft Project IDs. These are retained as distinct source IDs rather than silently merged.
- A bounded three-pair alias sensitivity raises unanimous prompts from 4/20 to 5/20; the main result remains that 15/20 prompts do not produce the same first-ranked product group across all four systems.

Methodology
Cross-sectional comparison of first-ranked recommended company IDs in the latest complete RecommendationIndex wave available for each market on October 28, 2026; PromptMarketMap initiated no new model runs.
For each completed evaluation, the single observation row with rank=1 and recommended=true. All 80 evaluations supplied exactly one such row.
Unanimous means all four systems' rank-one rows resolve to the same RecommendationIndex companyId. A three-system majority means at least three resolve to the same companyId.
Limitations
- This is a four-market, 20-prompt cross-section and not a census of software buying questions.
- The study reuses completed RI waves; it does not measure changes after October 25, 2026.
- Model labels are provider-recorded versions and may not expose every routing or serving detail.
- Rank one captures ordering, not the full recommendation set or reasoning quality.
- Recommendation, non-recommended mention, and citation are separate classifications.
- The four snapshots contain zero attached citation records, so source quality cannot be compared.
- Company IDs are not manually merged; source identity fragmentation may understate semantic agreement.
- A prompt-provider evaluation can recommend several companies; this analysis uses only its first-ranked recommended row.
- The observed ordering is not commercial market share, buyer preference, or conversion behavior.
- No claim of statistical generalization is made from 20 prompts.
- Prompt wording can materially affect rank order.
- Traffic, referrals, and RI conversions are unknown, not zero.
